Please do not include the time line drawing in your essay! It is just used for you to better conceptualize your essay. Draw a time line that begins in the 1960 and ends at the 2013. Above the line you are to identify in chronological order three significant events and/or transitions in the life of you or your family members (such events or transitions are like births, graduations, marriages, divorces, employment changes, income changes, geographic mobility, employment changes, or other changes you can think of). Next, think about the historical and social contexts underlying this particular individual’s life trajectory. What historical or societal events have affected his/her path or life? You are supposed to write about how these historical events substantially shaped the life trajectory of the particular individual you chose. Your essay will be graded based on how well you answered each question and the overall quality of your assignment. I strongly recommend you read the grading rubric in the appendix carefully before you start. Please organize your thoughts and arguments, present them in a logical manner and explain them in detail. Please proof read papers for typographical and grammatical errors. Appendix 1: excerpts of other students assignments as example The following are some examples from other students assignments. Please learn from them how to apply the sociological perspective to your own life events but do not be constrained by them. (1) During World War II my family underwent some great changes. My grandmother took a second job, working in the woolen mills making army blankets. My grandfather joined the marines and moved his whole family from Ohio to California It was during this time that my grandparents divorced. Divorces are higher during any period of dramatic economic change. Although Im sure my grandparents blamed themselves, their divorce was a product of the economy and society. The same theory holds true for my parents. When they divorced, they blamed themselves, wondering what each had done wrong, as I did. When I look at what was happening in the economy, the similarities [with my grandparents] are easy to see. The nation- wide divorce rate was up dramatically and the economy was beginning to take a terrible turn for the worse. (2)When people ask me why I enrolled in college a year ago, I usually answered that I enrolled because I wanted to. I realize now that my answer cannot be quite that simple. Because my family doctor believed that the pill was finally proven safe in 1963, I was able to plan my family. In doing so, my son and daughter are nearly raised and I am still young enough to pursue a second career. More than any other factor, though, the womens movement probably was the greatest influence on my decision. The successes of the movement in social equality have given me the necessary courage and confidence to attempt to be more than a mere shadow of my husbands social position. Appendix 2: grading rubric Sociological Understanding (40%) The essay should apply key sociological concepts, ideas, theories learned in class correctly and properly to analyze related topics. Assertions in the essay must be supported by evidence (from texts or from data) that is logically related to the thesis. Coverage (30%) The essay must be clearly based on readings and topics related to the course. Essays that are simple summaries of sources are adequate, but will not get the highest grades. The essay should answer all the required questions in the essay guideline. If you fail to answer any questions, some points will be deducted. However, you should organize the essay in a way that it flows smoothly. Do not just list your answers to each question. Originality (10%) The essay should be original. Originality does not mean that you must be the first to think or write something, but that you take different sources and write about them using your point of view. Originality is entailed in taking your sources and forging them into an essay in your voice. Summarizing sources will be adequate, but not very original. Papers written by you and previously submitted to other courses are not original for this course. Such recycled papers will get a failing grade. Copying directly from internet without citing properly is considered plagiarism and will result in a failing grade. What is plagiarism? Writing Quality (10%) Words and constructions should be chosen with care. Statements should be direct and clear.w The essay should contain no errors of sentence structure, spelling, word choice, or punctuation. If you have difficulty writing or English is your second language you should tell me at the beginning of the semester. Im not a writing teacher, but I will do what I can to help you become a better writer. You should also seek help at the Writing Center. Every paper must have a title and the authors name, either at the top of the first page or on a separate title page. All citations and references must be in ASA, APA or MLA format. The general tone of the essay should be academic and professional. Good writing often sounds like well-organized thoughtful conversation. I do not want you to imitate the turgid academic writing found in some sociology journals. I want you to write with a level of sophistication appropriate for well-educated college students.

The Effects of recession on PepsiCo

The Effects of recession on PepsiCo In the recession time period you can consider to all companies in recline stage even some companies are gaining profit and their profits are also infected by the overall recession. Here I am going to do start my work on PepsiCo, its sale is infected by the competitors. Specially Coca Cola broken its sale and demand in the market. Cola Colas best strategy that they introduced some new products in the market with modern marketing techniques and its the reason that Pepsis demand fell down and people intend to buy Coca Colas products most frequently. Pepsis maximum products are not frequently available at all regions. Why marketing plan is necessary? It is necessary because, boost your business and cover different issues with respect to service , branding, and product line. Market plan use for both businesses who are already exists in the market and a new business that is going to start. Marketing planning can be contains one year tenure or sometime it takes 5 years time period. Variety of actions are included in the marketing plan so every action takes much time to cover all the issues, for example situation analysis, SWOT analysis, marketing objectives and issues, marketing strategy, action items, financial budgets and forecasts, controls etc. Marketing strategy is the base of a well written plan. In this Essay I am going to discuss on PepsiCos marketing plan specially what methods and actions can boost up PepsiCo products while its competitor Coca Cola selling products frequently in the market and its marketing technique is more powerful rather than PepsiCo. In short the main purpose of marketing plan is boost your companies sale, create a centre of attention to new customers and maintain old customers using the latest marketing trends. There are several declining products in the market. Marketing is a big factor in the promotion of any product. I have seen an example in Pakistan there one company was advertised on television before to launch their product in the market. Infact that was advertisement of milk, a blank white paper box was in the advertisement and it was showing that something is coming. After few days they played their final advertisement with the proper product name and finally they launched their product in the market. There are already running milk products like Nestle, Haleeb but this new product was Olpers tetra pack milk. In short its very difficult to launch a new product in the market if you have not advertise through any media. The first benefit of advertised product is that people demand product by itself and stockers and suppliers providing products on public demand rather than a non advertised product difficult to sale and shopkeepers and customers are not easily agree to buy that product, a lot of effort is require to sale new product in the market without advertisement. History of PepsiCo In 1883 Pepsi was introduced by Caleb Braham. Pepsis first name when it was launched Brads Drink in New Bern, North Carolina. Caleb Braham who made Pepsi at his pharmacy where the drink was sold. Later Brads Drink changed into Pepsi Cola. The digestive enzyme pepsin and kola nuts used in the recipe. Celeb Braham sought to create a fountain drink that was delicious and would aid in digestion and boost energy. Pepsi was launched after Coca Cola or coke. It was cheaper than Coca Cola when it was launched initially, at that it was popular as poor mans cola. After that Pepsi was taken a good marketing strategy that in the advertisement Pepsi employed to celebrities. First celebrity was Barney Oldfield, the pioneer for automobile racing. Sodas are most frequently used items. Mostly sodas are delicious, they stand between liquor and juice. Those who are too young to drink beer but think fruit juice is too juvenile can order sodas. Those too old and are putting their health at risk by drinking hard drinks can enjoy soft drinks and no one would think any less of them. Sodas have a mass appeal therefore people most demand it, especially in the summer season when you feel thrust often people demand cold soda for kill thrust. In 1903, Bradham moved the bottling of Pepsi-Cola from his drugstore to a rented warehouse. That year, Bradham sold 7,968 gallons of  syrup. The next year, Pepsi was sold in six-ounce bottles, and sales increased to 19,848 gallons. In 1909, automobile race pioneer  Barney Oldfield  was the first celebrity to endorse Pepsi-Cola, describing it as A bully drinkrefreshing, invigorating, a fine bracer before a race. The advertising theme Delicious and Healthful was then used over the next two decades. In 1926, Pepsi received its first logo redesign since the original design of 1905. In 1929, the logo was changed again. In 1931, at the depth of the  Great Depression, the Pepsi-Cola Company entered bankruptcy in large part due to financial losses incurred by speculating on wildly fluctuating sugar prices as a result of  World War I. Assets were sold and Roy C. Megargel bought the Pepsi trademark. Eight years later, the company went bankrupt again. Pepsis assets were then purchased by  Charles Guth, the President of Loft Inc. Loft was a candy manufacturer with retail stores that contained soda fountains. He sought to replace  Coca-Cola  at his stores fountains after Coke refused to give him a discount on syrup. Guth then had Lofts chemists reformulate the Pepsi-Cola syrup formula. On three separate occasions between 1922 and 1933, the Coca-Cola Company was offered the opportunity to purchase the Pepsi-Cola company and it declined on each occasion. In 1965, Pepsi employed another marketing strategy which was company expansion. They merged with Frito-Lay, the most popular snack brand in the world. PepsiCo was formed. Pepsi took care of the beverages while Frito-lay manned the snacks. In 1966, PepsiCo settled into the Eastern European and Japanese markets. They also introduced new products; Diet Pepsi and Mountain Dew. Here below I am showing the most popular brands that are available at different location of the world. Pepsis Most popular products and brands: (Something for everyone) Question 1: Produce a Marketing Plan Write a marketing plan for the declining product you have analyzed using an appropriate framework. Situation Analysis Company Analysis Company gaining profit day by day. It is the second most demanded soda drink company in the whole world. Pepsi launched some new products in the market and increased its sale and annual profit. Problem is there, people are not fully aware about new products and new products are not present in all locations therefore there is need to provide new products on all locations. Especially in Asian countries like Pakistan and India all products of PepsiCo are not available. Company Goal: Ensure high levels of associate engagement and satisfaction compared with other Fortune 500 companies. Lack of capital constraints (availability of large free cash flow). Great brands, strong distribution, innovative capabilities. Number one maker of snacks, such as corn chips and potato chips. PepsiCo sells three products through the same distribution channel.   For example, combining the production capabilities of Pepsi, Gatorade and Tropicana is a big opportunity to reduce costs, improve efficiency and smooth out the impact of seasonal fluctuations in demand for particular product. Weaknesses: Pepsi hard to inspire vision and direction for large global company. Not all PepsiCo products bear the company name. PepsiCo is far away from leader Coca-cola in the international market demand is highly elastic. Customer Analysis: Pepsi covered a huge market, proximately more than 80 million people are involved in buying their products. Pepsi spending power is proximately $600 million annually. 90 percent parents say kids influence what they buy. Many work and have their own money to spend. They have proven to be brand loyal. Mostly 12 to 21 years people are in target market. How to reach Generation Y ? Creates promotions tailored to youngster needs and interests. Gen Yers like entertainment and music. They like to laugh, but not at anothers expense. To attract the teen market radio and television should be used. They are internet savvy. What does generation Y like? Free stuff and discounts. Contests and Drawings. Club cards. Music. Team sporting events. They are into clothes and the latest styles. Teen friendly retail stores and internet site. Pepsi and Generation Y: Pepsi targets generation Y specifically. Current campaigns use effective techniques. Sex appeal: Sex appeal is not only an attention getter with the current generation, but is also becoming more socially acceptable in the advertising directed toward them. Competitor Analysis: Market Position Coca Cola is number one cola product in all over the world. Coca Colas marketing strategy is most powerful and effective. Maximum market coverage has been done by Coca Cola. Its the result that its annual sale and profit is more than PepsiCo. Strengths Coca-Cola has strong brand recognition across the globe. The company has a leading brand value and a strong brand portfolio. Business-Week and Interbrand, a branding consultancy, recognize. Coca-Cola as one of the leading brands in their top 100 global brands ranking in 2006.The Business Week-Interbrand valued Coca-Cola at $67,000 million in 2006. Coca-Cola ranks well ahead of its close competitor Pepsi which has a ranking of 22 having a brand value of $12,690 million Furthermore, Coca-Cola owns a large portfolio of product brands. The company owns four of the top five soft drink brands in the world: Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite and Fanta. Strong brands allow the company to introduce brand extensions such as Vanilla Coke, Cherry Coke and Coke with Lemon. Over the years, the company has made large investments in brand promotions. Consequently, Coca-cola is one of the best recognized global brands. The companys strong brand value facilitates customer recall and allows Coca-Cola to pene trate new markets and consolidate existing ones. Weakness Negative publicity: The company received negative publicity in India during September 2006.The company was accused by the Center for Science and Environment (CSE) of selling products containing pesticide residues. Coca-Cola products sold in and around the Indian national capital region contained a hazardous pesticide residue. These pesticides included chemicals which could cause cancers, damage the nervous and reproductive systems and reduce bone mineral density. Such negative publicity could adversely impact the companys brand image and the demand for Coca-Cola products. This could also have an adverse impact on the companys growth prospects in the international markets. Sluggish performance in North America Coca-Colas performance in North America was far from robust. North America is Coca-Colascore market generating about 30% of total revenues during fiscal 2006. Therefore, a strong performance in North America is important for the company. North America the sale of unit cases did not record any growth. Unit case retail volume in North America decreased 1% primarily due to weak sparkling beverage trends in the second half of 2006 and decline in the warehouse-delivered water and juice businesses. Moreover, the company also expects performance in North America to be weak during 2007. Sluggish performance in North America could impact the companys future growth prospects and prevent Coca-Cola from recording a more robust top-line growth. Decline in cash from operating activities The companys cash flow from operating activities declined during fiscal 2006. Cash flows from operating activities decreased 7% in 2006 compared to 2005. Net cash provided by operating activities reached $5,957 million in 2006, from $6,423 million in 2005. Coca-Colas cash flows from operating activities in 2006 also decreased compared with 2005 as a result of a contribution of approximately $216 million to a tax-qualified trust to fund retiree medical benefits. The decrease was also the result of certain marketing accruals recorded in 2005. So there is need to be examined these factors with carefully. Social:  The social factors influence the business at various levels, and need to be carefully examined. The following are important features in this regard: Does technology permit the manufacture of products at economical rates, without compromising quality? Do the technologies present original products, like mobile telephone,  internet banking, the purchase of books through internet, etc. Modern communication channels, like  Customer Relationship Management, banners, etc PEST Analysis of Pepsi The PEST analysis method has been successfully applied by  Pepsi, which has obtained economic advantage in its industry. The PEST analysis method and examples specific to Pepsi are seen in the following factors: Political: The manufacture, delivery, and use of numerous Pepsi products are subject to many federal regulations, like the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Merger of Quaker Oats produced synergy across the board. Record revenues and increasing market share. Lack of capital constraints (availability of large free cash flow). Great brands, strong distribution, innovative capabilities   Number one maker of snacks, such as corn chips and potato chips PepsiCo sells three products through the same distribution channel.   For example, combining the production capabilities of Pepsi, Gatorade and Tropicana is a big opportunity to reduce costs, improve efficiency and smooth out the impact of seasonal fluctuations in demand for particular product. Weakness Pepsi hard to inspire vision and direction for large global company. Not all PepsiCo products bear the company name. PepsiCo is far away from leader Coca-cola in the international market demand is highly elastic. Opportunity Food division should expand internationally. Noncarbonated drinks are the fastest-growing part of the industry There are increasing trend toward healthy foods   Focus on most important customer trend Convenience. Threats FB industry is mature. Pepsi is blamed for pesticide residues in their products in one of their most promising emerging market e.g in India. Over 50 percent of the companys sales come from Frito-Lay; this is a threat if the market takes a downturn. PepsiCo now competes with Cadbury Schweppes, Coca-Cola, and Kraft foods (because of broader product line) which are well-run and financially sound competitors.   Size of company will demand a varied marketing program; Social, cultural, economic, political and governmental constrains. Strategies The purpose of the strategy is to increase the EPS by 15% per annum and increase PepsiCos stock price. There are two ways to increase the EPS, first is to increase the income and second to decrease the amount of stocks outstanding. To increase the income, there are Bases for Consumer Market Segmentation There are number of variables involved in  consumer market segmentation, alone and in combination. These variables are: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Geographic variables à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Demographic variables à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Psychographic variables à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Behavioral variables Geographic Segmentation In geographical segmentation, market is divided into different geographical units like: Regions (by country, nation, state, neighborhood) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Population Density (Urban, suburban, rural) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ City size (Size of area, population size and growth rate) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Climate (Regions having similar climate pattern) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Regions (by country, nation, state, neighborhood) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Population Density (Urban, suburban, rural) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ City size (Size of area, population size and growth rate) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Climate (Regions having similar climate pattern) A company, either serving a few or all geographic segments, needs to put attention on variability of geographic needs and wants. After segmenting consumer market on geographic bases, companies localize their marketing efforts (product, advertising, promotion and sales efforts). Demographic Segmentation In demographic segmentation, market is divided into small segments based on demographic variables like: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Age à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Gender à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Income à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Occupation à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Education à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Social Class à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Generation à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Family size à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Family life cycle à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Home Ownership à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Religion à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Ethnic group/Race à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Nationality Demographic factors are most important factors for segmenting the customers groups. Consumer needs, wants, usage rate these all depend upon demographic variables. So, considering demographic factors, while defining marketing strategy, is crucial. Psychographic Segmentation In Psychographic Segmentation, segments are defined on the basis of social class, lifestyle and personality characteristics. Psychographic variables include: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Interests à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Opinions à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Personality à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Self Image à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Activities à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Values à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Attitudes A segment having demographically grouped consumers may have different psychographic characteristics. Behavioral Segmentation In this segmentation market is divided into segments based on consumer knowledge, attitude, use or response to product. Behavioral variables include: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Usage Rate à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Product benefits à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Brand Loyalty à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Price Consciousness à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Occasions (holidays like mothers day, New Year and Eid) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ User Status (First Time, Regular or Potential) Behavioral segmentation is considered most favorable segmentation tool as it uses those variables that are closely related to the product itself. Bases for Business Market Segmentation Business market can be segmented on the bases consumer market variables but because of many inherent differences like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Businesses are few but purchase in bulk à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Evaluate in depth à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Joint decisions are made Business market might be segmented on the bases of following variables: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Company Size: what company sizes should we serve? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Industry: Which industry to serve? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Purchasing approaches: Purchasing-function organization, Nature of existing relationships, purchase policies and criteria. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Situational factors: seasonal trend, urgency: should serve companies needing quick order deliver, Order: focus on large orders or small. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Geographic: Regional industrial growth rate, Customer concentration, and international macroeconomic factors Marketing Mix Price, Place, Product and Promotion Remember that you are working with an existing company that has set objectives and missions. You will need to align your product to the companys objectives. Please be sure to include a sample of advertising (using a medium or media of your choice) which supports your plan. Sponsoring to different charity shows, arranging different musical concerts sponsor by Pepsi, awarding shows like best performance awards to different actors sponsor by Pepsi. It gives good impact on the peoples mind. I often seen that some cricket matches or sports sponsored by the Pepsi. Lot of ways which you can boost your product and give challenge to your competitor. In short I would like to give preference to advertise by media, because media is now everywhere, TV channels, Radios, Newspapers, Magazines and much more. YouTube is big bank and now few advertisement are on YouTube. Pepsi needs to introduce some of its new products and their advertisement on YouTube. Last night I listen some famous songs on YouTube and before to start song an advertisement of company was there, like Cashforphones.co.uk advertisement was on YouTube. Everyone is not visiting Pepsis website and everyone is not fully aware with the Pepsis products. Therefore there is need to give awareness to people during their activities, like during watching TV or sitting on internet, means we need to find the things in which people most frequently come and use and there we need to give advertisement of products. After get awareness of products people will automatically demand on selling points that we need Pepsis products. Retailers, wholesalers and everyone (supply chain) will maintain that new products at their locations because of public demand of that product. Conclusion The Pepsi-Cola drink was invented in 1898 and grew basically by following the Coca-Cola marketing, product, and distribution strategies. Like Coca-Cola it advertised as heavily as finances permitted, and was distributed through soda fountains and franchised bottlers. Assessing Pepsis marketing strategies; It is clear that Pepsi has made several right choices. With the existence of Coke, Pepsi took advantage of their late entry into the market by lowering their prices. Before it entered the international market, it first familiarized its customers with its product thoroughly in its home base. By the time Pepsi was ready to enter the international market, it had a good grasp of what its target audience really is. In conclusion, Pepsis marketing strategies, from past to present included: enhancing their distribution system, knowing the environment of the foreign market and finding the things their target buyers had in common, adding new innovations and products while improving the old products, imaginative advertising, use of advanced technology, assertive promotions , trendy, socially-aware campaigns, alliances with major corporations and expansion into other industries such as restaurants. Comparing Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther K

Comparing Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King Jr.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Any one can say that a law is unfair and unjust. However, who is really willing to accept the consequences for going against an unjust law? Is breaking this law really worth the punishment? The government is the one to decide whether a law is reasonable, but what if a member of the public believes that a law is not? Should he rebel against this law? Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King Jr. answered yes to this question and believed that one should speak out against an injustice. They both believed that government had many flaws. Even though they shared many beliefs in many of the same subjects concerning Civil Disobedience, they had many different views on how the government should work and how the citizen should be treated by society.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Both Martin Luther King Jr. and Thoreau believed that one should act out against an unjust law by means of peaceful protest. If one is going to openly express his ideas of disagreeing with an unjust law, he must be willing to accept the consequences. Both Martin Luther King Jr. and Thoreau demonstrated this acceptance of consequences by going to jail without repercussion. This shows that they truly believed in the eradication of such a law that forces them to do something that they do not want to do. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted was arrested for gathering with others to protest peacefully, which the police claimed was unlawful, because they we...

A Night in Afghanistan Essay -- Personal Narrative, Descriptive Essay

"Shhhh!" my mother whispered as the tanks rumbled by under the cold Afghan night, the stars twinkling above the mountains surrounding us. From our hiding place in the brush along the shoulder of the dirt path through the Khyber Pass, I could see tanks stretching to infinity and, try as I might, I could not find an end to the convoy of trucks. Huddled along with my father, mother, and infant brother and sister, we peered anxiously as the Russian Spetsnaz scouts rolled past us in jeeps ahead of the convoy heading toward the Afghanistan-Pakistan border-the very place our destination lay. My brother began to whimper. My mother began to pray. It seemed as if the line of tanks would never end. Finally, as the last of them rolled by, silence engulfed us. My father had been planning for months for our flight into Pakistan along the Khyber road and we could not stop now. Our nerves were frayed. We had not slept for three days since being smuggled out of the capital and the 15-mile walk across the border might have well been 15 hundred miles. My father stopped for a moment and fished a small, empty... ... Today, that pouch of a few ounces of earth that my father gathered during our last hours in Afghanistan lies on a desk in his study, reminding me of what I have lost, of another place filled with memories that I used to call home. But today, what I call home is in Orange County, California, half a world away from Afghanistan. Perhaps one day I will go back to see what is left after the years of war and strife and once again relax in our old backyard, or go to pick apples in an orchard in the Maymana district. But I will go back only to visit.

Admissions Essay - I Will Practice Medicine :: Medicine College Admissions Essays

Admissions Essay - I Will Practice Medicine From the time I was 10 years old, I spent my summers at overnight camp. While baseball and canoeing were fun, I spent my free time in the camp radio station. Sitting at the microphone, my imagination ran wild as I made stories come alive, weaving characters in and out of danger, delivering punch lines, injecting irony. My fingers flew over the controls, pushing buttons, pulling levers at just the right times. I thrived on the creativity and precision it took to sound good on the air. Â   As I grew older, my exposure to the media expanded. My first job out of college was with CNN's Larry King Live, where I spent three exciting years. While the job had its thrills, it became an unsatisfying way to make a living for someone who was taught to work hard for the under-served, think carefully about life's priorities, and live by them everyday. I longed to feed my intellectual curiosity. I wanted to work with my hands and remain involved with people. I was mature enough to work hard for what I wanted. Â   I quit my job at CNN and began taking Pre-Med courses and volunteering in a hospital. I moved from my two-bedroom apartment to a small efficiency. Black-tie affairs with celebrities became TV dinners over a chemistry book. My life was changed. One year later, I continue to donate my time as an Emergency Medical Technician in the Georgetown Emergency Room, and I play my guitar and sing with sick kids in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Â   Volunteering has confirmed what I thought - that medicine is where I belong. Even in my limited capacity as a volunteer, bringing a cold patient a blanket or putting a reassuring hand on her shoulder is deeply rewarding. Watching a child smile as we sing Old McDonald, and knowing that, even for a moment, he is thinking about something besides his sick body, keeps me coming back every week. And learning about why our bodies work the way they do has even greater rewards, for a slightly different reason. Â   When I was 13 years old, my mother died after battling liver cancer for a year and a half. I remember very well the first few months after the disease took hold. We tried different drugs and therapies in various doses.

Globalisation and Cross Cultural Management

Globalization and cross cultural management Case: globalization of health care- shortage of radiologists in the US and demand is twice as large as the rate of graduation. Solution is to send Images over the internet to be interpreted by radiologists in India? In 2004 170,000 triggers visited India for medical treatments and is expected to grow at 15% for the next several years Globalization: The shift toward a more integrated and interdependent world economy. Globalization of markets: the merging of distinctly separate national markets into a global market place. This includes falling barriers to cross border trade (which have made It easier to sell Internationally), the convergence of global tastes and preferences and the development of standardized products suited to a world market. Difficulties with the globalization of markets generally arise from significant differences among these national markets, country specific marketing strategies and varied product mixes. Globalization of production: refers to the sourcing of goods and services from locations around the world to take advantage of differences In the cost or quality of the factors of production (land, labor, capital).Increasingly companies are taking advantage of modern communications technology, and particularly the Internet, to outsource service activities to low cost producers in other nations. Outsourcing of productive activities to difference suppliers results in the creation of products that are global in nature. Impediments to the globalization tot production include: formal and informal barriers to trade, barriers to FED, transportation costs. Issues associated with economic risk and Issues associated with political risk. Drivers of globalization: Two macro factors seem to underlie the trend toward greater globalization. These Include- * decline In barriers to the free flow of goods, services and capital that has occurred since WWW * technological change Declining trade and Investment barriers: During the sass's and ass, many of the nation states of the world erected formidable barriers to international trade and FED. Advanced industrial nations of the west committed themselves after WWW to removing barriers to the free flow of goods, services and capital between nations. Technology: Lowering of trade barriers made globalization possible; technology has made it a real TTY.Since the end tot 2 the world NAS seen advances in miscommunication, information processing and transportation technology. Advantages of globalization: * Lower prices for goods and services * economic growth stimulation * increase in consumer income * creates Jobs * countries specialist in production of goods and services that are produced most efficiently Disadvantages of globalization: * Destroys manufacturing Jobs in wealthy, advanced countries * Wage rates of unskilled workers in advanced countries declines * companies move to countries with fewer labor and environment regulations * loss of sovereignt y What is culture? Culture is coherent (each fragment of a culture makes sense if you now the whole tapestry of culture), Culture is learned (families, friends, media), Culture is the view of a group of people (nation, religion, clan, family), culture ranks what is important (values) and culture furnishes attitudes and dictates behavior. There are two main elements of culture. These include: on stage or visible elements of culture and back stage or invisible elements of culture. Transactional culture is the culture that develops when cultures meet and have to collaborate (I. E an NC).Model of culture: Artifacts and Products Explicit Onstage-culture Norms and Values Off-stage culture Basic Assumptions Implicit Off stage culture: includes aspects such as the Susie culture where we give everybody a fair go, and the Chinese culture where they have the importance of Guiana in society and not losing face, or in Thai culture where there is a high respect for superiors and harmony/balance. Understanding dimensions and theories of culture part one (Trampers) What is culture? : Culture is acquired knowledge that people use to interpret experience and generate social behavior. This knowledge forms values, creates attitudes, and influences behavior. Characteristics tot culture: * Learned * Shared * Trans-generational Symbolic * Patterned * Adaptive A model of culture: Understanding culture: Cultures do not vary in essence (people spend their time trying to solve similar problems) but in their preference for certain solutions. Egg is how to treat a flu (sickness) in a country. Understanding culture is to understand the underlying meanings attached by a given community/group of people to those universal concepts and activities, and to the behaviors they incur.Values in culture: Values are learned from the culture from which the individual is reared. Differences in cultural values may result in varying management practices ND involve the basic convictions that people have abo ut right and wrong, good and bad etc. Value similarities and differences across cultures: 1 . Strong relationship between level of managerial success and personal values 2. Value patterns predict managerial success and can be used in selection/placement decisions 3. Country differences in relationship between values and success; however findings across US, Japan, Australia and India are similar 4.Values of more successful managers favor pragmatic, dynamic, achievement oriented and active role in the interaction with others 5. Values of less successful managers tend toward tactic and passive values; relatively passive roles in interacting with others How culture affects managerial approaches: * Decentralized and Centralized decision making: In some societies, top managers make all important organizational decisions. In others, these decisions are diffused throughout the enterprise, and middle and lower level managers actively participate in, and make, key decisions. Safety Vs. Risk: In some societies, organizational decision makers are risk averse and have great difficulty with conditions of uncertainty. In others, risk taking is encouraged, and decision making under Individual Vs. Group rewards: In some countries, uncertainty is common. Personnel who do outstanding work are given individual rewards in the form of bonuses and commissions. In others, cultural norms require group rewards, and individual rewards are frowned upon. * Informal procedures Vs. formal procedures: In some societies, much is accomplished through informal meaner. In others, formal procedures are set forth and followed rigidly. * High organizational loyalty vs. low organizational loyalty: In some societies, people identity very strongly with their organization or employer. In others, people identify with their occupational roof, such as engineer or mechanic. * Cooperation Vs. Competition: Some societies encourage cooperation between their people while others encourage competition between the ir people. * Short term Vs. Long term horizons: Some cultures focus most heavily on short term horizons, such as short-range goals of profit and efficiency.Others are more interested in long-range goals, such as market share and technological developments. * Stability Vs. Innovation: The culture of some countries encourages stability and resistance to change. The culture of others puts high value on innovation and change. Trampers' Cultural Dimensions: . Universalism Vs. Particulars: Universalism implies that ideas and practices can be applied everywhere. High universalism countries have lots of formal rules and closely adhere to business contracts (egg Canada, US, HECK).Particulars is where the circumstances dictate how ideas/practices apply; high particulars countries often modify contracts (egg China, South Korea) 2. Individualism Vs. Communitarian's: Individualism focuses on people as individuals. Countries with high individualism stress personal and individual manners- they ass ume great personal responsibility (egg Canada, Thailand, US, Japan). Communitarian's is where people regard themselves as part of a group. They value group related issues, committee decisions and Joint responsibility (egg Malaysia). 3.Neutral Vs. Emotional: Neutral is a culture where emotions are not shown and people act stoically and maintain composure (egg Japan and UK). In emotional, emotions are expressed openly and naturally- people smile a lot, talk loudly and greet catheter with enthusiasm (egg Mexico, Netherlands, Switzerland). 4. Specific Vs. Diffuse: Specific is defined as a large public space shared with others and their small private space if guarded closely. High specific cultures the people are open and extroverted, with a strong separation between work and personal life (egg UK and US).For diffuse, public and private spaces are similar size, where the public space is guarded because it is shared with the private space; people are indirect and introverted with their wo rk/ private life being closely linked (egg China, Spain). 5. Achievement Vs. Ascription: Achievement oriented is a status based on how well functions are performed (Austria, US). An ascription function is status based on who or what the person is (China, Indonesia). 6. Time: Sequential is where here is only one activity at a time, appointments are kept strictly and plans are followed as they are laid out (US).Synchronous involves multi tasking and making approximate appointments alongside schedules that are subordinate to relationships (egg France, Mexico). Present Vs. Future: Future more important in Italy, US; Present more important in Venezuela, Indonesia; all three time periods equally important in France and Belgium. 7. The Environment: Inner directed is where people believe in the control of outcomes (US, Greece, Japan) and outer directed is where people believe in letting things take their own course (China,

Properties of Gases Essay

The purpose of this lab was to investigate and discover the physical and chemical properties of some gases. Throughout this lab the ability to identify if and when gasses were present was enhanced. During the first step of this lab, when obtaining the hydrogen from the mossy zinc and the hydrochloric acid, it took a lot longer than I thought it would for the water in the pipet to be displaced. I was tempted to remove the stopper and add another piece of zinc and see if that would make it go faster, but I did not want to interrupt the process. It seemed the longer that the mossy zinc was exposed to the hydrochloric acid the faster it dissolved and therefore more gas was produced. When the manganese and the hydrogen peroxide were exposed to each other there was much more fizzing produced than that of the zinc and the hydrochloric acid. I was surprised (although I don’t know why) that the lime water turned cloudy when exposed to breath. It is quite simple when you think about it that when you exhale you release carbon dioxide which as shown in the above data turns the lime water cloudy. Conclusion/Discussion During the course of this lab I learned a lot about the generation of gases. I was somewhat confused in the beginning about how to use some of the equipment for this lab. As the lab went on I figured it out and became much more comfortable with it. I thought some of the experiments were very informative and interesting. I especially liked the portions about reactions with a lit match or the glowing splint as it showed on a small scale if the gas produced was flammable or not. Questions A. Give two reasons why we fill the gas generator test tubes almost to the top with chemicals. 1. The first reason we fill the test tubes almost to the top with chemicals is so that the reaction between the two substances is high enough to the top to go through the rubber stopper and displace the water in the pipet and trap the gas. 2. The second reason is so that observations can be made easily about the reactions. If it was not almost completely filled we may have had to try to pick up the test tube or remove the tissue paper to make observations and this may have altered the results. B. What happens to the zinc in the hydrogen generation experiment? The zinc begins to slowly dissolve when exposed to the hydrochloric acid. The longer the zinc was submerged in the hydrochloric acid the faster it seemed to dissolve. C. What happens to the manganese in the oxygen generation experiment? The manganese produced large amounts of fizzing when exposed to the hydrogen peroxide. It was difficult to tell whether the manganese was actually dissolving or just fizzing. D. Write a balanced equation for the reaction between O2 and H2. 2H2 + O2 2H2O E. What is the function/purpose of the bromothymol blue in the CO2 experiment? The purpose of the bromothymol blue was to show the reaction of the chemicals and the gas that was formed. Since the bromothymol blue changed from blue to yellow, that signified that the gas formed was acidic. F. Bromothymol blue is blue in the presence of basic solutions, and yellow in the presence of acidic solutions. If your solution is a murky green, what might you assume about the solution? I would assume one of two things. There may have possibly been a contamination of the substance. The other possibility might be that the pH of the solution is neutral. If the bromothymol blue turns a murky green color this may indicate that the substance is neither basic or acidic.
